The 2011 US Open is right away at the corner, so there is a lot of expectation about the last Grand Slam of the 2011 year. With the incredible results in the Cincinnati, there in no way to give a solid preview of what is coming. The victory of Andy Murray and Maria Sharapova leaves us with lots of healthy suspense.
The Scottish Andy Murray took down over #1 Novak Djokovic in the final match at Cincinnati. He broke out over the Serbian with power and skilled play on the first sets. Djokovic had it kind of difficult due to shoulder injury. I don't mean the play of Murray was untalented or effortless, since he came with the big guns, he was facing the champion of the world after all, but even the #1 can't beat a skilled player with just one arm, so Djokovic has to retire of the game. Anyways victory is victory, and Murray could have achieved it even with Djokovic uninjured and not retiring.
This was a good week for Murray. With Djokovic injured, Nadal and Federer struggling to find a new way of gaming after a few past defeats, this may be the chance for the Scottish to win his first major. Murrays has never won a Major, but he has been real close on three opportunities. He has been at the doors of victory on 2008 the US Open, and the 2010-2011 Australian Open. He has managed to keep among the first ten men's ranking positions during the past four years and he could become one of those elite rankings.
Cincinnati wasn't so nice at the semifinals with Federer and Nadal, the Swedish fell against Tomas Berdych and Nadal was taken down by the American Mardy Fish. The best two players who reigned over at least a decade are now walking a difficult path to improve their game, however I think they still have a lot of energy to give.
At the WTA, with the Super Mom, Kim Clijsters out of the game and unable to defend her Championship title due to an injure in the muscles of her stomach, the opportunity for the Russian Sharapova and maybe for the US native Serena Williams is clearly open. Williams returned no so long ago, after a brief hiatus during 2010 after sitting out a number of ailments. Because of the long pause, Williams is now ranked #29th in the world at this moment. And even it dosnt matter, it makes her way to the finals a hard trip.
Serena won't have to much problems dealing with Vera Zvonareva or Caroline Wozniacki, Williams's most hard opponent will be Maria Sharapova, that in the last months, the Russian princess has re-improved her game, reaching the semi-finals in the French Open and runner-up finish at Wimbledon, and winning at Cincinnati. Just a small group can match Serena's skills, however, Sharapova definitely can.
With an injured menagerie and elite players in the ATP and WTA struggling to find and recover new game styles, the 2011 US Open promises to be the Grand Slam that may present us new world champions.
